Alfresco is an Open Source Enterprise Content Management (ECM) platform. It uses familiar concepts such as shared drives and Office tools to enable users to capture, share and retain content, to version, search and simply build their own content applications. Alfresco integrates with Microsoft Office and Open Office, giving users the ability to save, version, share, search, and audit with configurable workflow integration. Alfresco also supports the Windows Sharepoint Protocol, meaning that users can check Office documents in and out as if they were using Sharepoint. Alfresco also enables 'out of the box' collaborative content management - users can easily create virtual teams, project workspaces and websites, track document changes, access document libraries, all from a configurable web based dashboard. Furthermore, Alfresco has an enterprise level Web Content Management System, that can power intranets, extranets and corporate websites. Full featured collaborative functionality, including team workspace, wkis, blogs and forums, is delivered 'out of the box', alongside sophisticated user roles and permissions management.
